Gumboot Friday

Gumboot Friday
Kia ora bloggers!
Last Friday was Gumboot Friday. Gumboot Friday is all about mental health. We raised awareness for people
struggling to think positively. That is what mental  health is all about, what you think about yourself. To help people
with mental health, Waikowhai Primary School made little cards with positive notes on them, to put in people's
letter boxes. Also on the actual Gumboot Friday itself, all the teachers wore gumboots to raise money for people
with mental health issues.
Imagine thinking only bad things about yourself? That's what some of the people that we are raising money for are
like. On some of the cards we wrote quotes or just little kind things that we thought up. Mine was, “Kind people are
the best kind of people.” Another one that I made said, “Be brave,  be delightful, be kind, be you.” We did this
because we wanted to brighten up people's day.
30 students were chosen to fill in a booklet called Puketapapa about well-being and making changes in the
community. I was one of those students. We filled in what we thought could be better for our community. I put
down on my form that we could post nice notes in people's letter boxes. Little did I know the teacher's would read
them and make a whole project out of a few words that came out of my mouth, so that's what we did.
Our inquiry topic this year is  well-being (Hauora). it means To think good things about yourself and live a healthy
positive life. It also means to look after your body. We have been learning about our emotions and connecting
them with music, we did it all with a deputy principal Miss McGrath.
Gumboot Friday is called Gumboot Friday  because the person who invented it thought that if you don't have a
very good well-being or mental health it's like your brain is wading through mud. In this case the mud is bad
thoughts about yourself. You need gumboots to wade through it. The person this year who is the head of Gumboot
Friday is called Mike King. He won New Zealander of the year in  2018.
I think that  doing this was really good for our community. One of the mum’s who got a note called the school and
said that the note had  changed her son completely. That just shows you what even the smallest things can do.
