Our People Art and Our Maori God Art!

Our People and Our Maori Gods Art!

Hey bloggers,

For a couple of weeks now Waikowhai Primary School has been doing lots of art projects. Some of them are really big and others are quite small. My personal favourite would have to be our big cultural people art. Waikowhai has a lot of different cultures and religions so we agreed for each class to get two cultures each and study them. We mostly look at their clothes and patterns. My class Hauraki was given a Sri lankan girl and a Afghani boy.

In our art books we drew out some designs that we thought would be good for an outfit for that culture. It had to be relative to that culture and it could not be random. For my Sri lankan girl I thought that it would be cool if the design was flowers. Since we were allowed to use our Chromebook to search cultural patterns I started on flowers that are native to Sri lanka, I found some really good ones.

After we had all finished our drafts we took them together and choose a girl and a boy. After that our teacher drew out the out line of our person and choose the colours. She then asked us all to paint our people. We took turns painting and the ones who weren't painting were looking at the Maori Gods. We also looked at the Maori creation myth. A New Zealand artist had illustrated and written the book in a Maori sort of design and that is where we got the idea of drawing the Maori Gods, or at least how we think they would look.
