Swimming sports

✌🌊Swimming Sports!
Hey everyone I'm back!
Today I'm back and I'm going to tell you about our swimming sports. We each got two races to begin with, then depending on how well you do in your other races you might get put into one of the relay teams or both. I got put into both of the relay teams, also I came second in both my original races. When I was in my first relay my team came first, in the second relay we came third. The two relay teams were The Parent, Teacher Relay V Kids. The second one was The House Relay. I was very proud to be in these relay teams. Since I am a school leader me and some of the other leaders had to go up to the front of everyone and encourage them to cheer on the little kids. We all did very well, and it was good that parents could come and help in the water. We walked to the pools, it was a great day for it.

Gumboot Friday

Gumboot Friday
Kia ora bloggers!
Last Friday was Gumboot Friday. Gumboot Friday is all about mental health. We raised awareness for people
struggling to think positively. That is what mental  health is all about, what you think about yourself. To help people
with mental health, Waikowhai Primary School made little cards with positive notes on them, to put in people's
letter boxes. Also on the actual Gumboot Friday itself, all the teachers wore gumboots to raise money for people
with mental health issues.
Imagine thinking only bad things about yourself? That's what some of the people that we are raising money for are
like. On some of the cards we wrote quotes or just little kind things that we thought up. Mine was, “Kind people are
the best kind of people.” Another one that I made said, “Be brave,  be delightful, be kind, be you.” We did this
because we wanted to brighten up people's day.
30 students were chosen to fill in a booklet called Puketapapa about well-being and making changes in the
community. I was one of those students. We filled in what we thought could be better for our community. I put
down on my form that we could post nice notes in people's letter boxes. Little did I know the teacher's would read
them and make a whole project out of a few words that came out of my mouth, so that's what we did.
Our inquiry topic this year is  well-being (Hauora). it means To think good things about yourself and live a healthy
positive life. It also means to look after your body. We have been learning about our emotions and connecting
them with music, we did it all with a deputy principal Miss McGrath.
Gumboot Friday is called Gumboot Friday  because the person who invented it thought that if you don't have a
very good well-being or mental health it's like your brain is wading through mud. In this case the mud is bad
thoughts about yourself. You need gumboots to wade through it. The person this year who is the head of Gumboot
Friday is called Mike King. He won New Zealander of the year in  2018.
I think that  doing this was really good for our community. One of the mum’s who got a note called the school and
said that the note had  changed her son completely. That just shows you what even the smallest things can do.

The Tread Lightly Caravan

💦The Tread Lightly Caravan!🌧
Hey bloggers!
Today we had the Tread Lightly Caravan come to school. Straight after the roll was called we ran through the rain to the Caravan, we were the first class to do all of the activities. We were divided into three groups. My group's first activity was the drain game. We were each given a bottle containing something you need to dispose of, I got cooking oil and fat. When it came your turn you would up to the front and then decide were your thing needed to go. The next activity was going and finding all of the drains around the school. We checked all of the drains to see if they were all clear of rubbish and other things, we learnt that its only rain down the drain. The third activity was Virtual Reality, we put on the headset and then we went on a under water adventure.

Family Fun day!

The Family Fun Day!
Hey Bloggers!
Last Friday it was...
Waikowhai's Community Fun Day! We had TWO bouncy castles, a giant water slide and much much more. We were divided into our house groups. The mighty Tui (my house group), Kea, Ruru and Pukeko. All the house groups are the names of NZ birds in Maori, we have had these house groups for years. Because I was in the leadership team, I had to wear an orange t - shirt with my name on the back - that I usually wear when I'm doing my duties. I helped out a lot by helping sell at the bake sale and staying at the bottom of the  Bouncy castle so no one got hurt, but I was also having fun!
My favourite bit was the water slide because I got to crash off it and I enjoyed it a lot! On the Fun Day it was also the day for the call of prayer so we had two minutes silence to remember the lives that were lost in the mass shooting. Here is a video showing how much fun we had on the amazing day!

The special assembly

                    The special assembly

Hi bloggers
As you might know something horrid has happened in NZ Christchurch. It has effected the whole of NZ, so at Waikowhai Primary School we had a special assembly respecting the people who passed away. We planted a  Kowhai tree as part of the assembly. Children from all areas of the school were selected to put cards down around the tree. These cards are for all the people who might of been effected in the attacks. We got one child from each of the schools 16 cultures those children represented what their culture was. In Reading we looked at some of the websites set up for the 50 people who died. We chose a Kowhai tree because our school is called Waikowhai. We did the two minutes silence on Friday which was during our schools Family Fun Day. We practised a look down because of the attack. I completely support Christchurch in this sad time. Our goal after what happened on the 15th of march 2019 is to not be racist and be the best we can be! I am really proud of how NZ has reacted it is amazing and shows the world how amazing we are.

The Environmental Group.

Hi bloggers
My name is Neeve and this is my first ever blog. This week in Environmental Group, I learnt
About beeswax and Kawakawa balm. Did you know that the Kawakawa leaves that have holes in them,
means they're the best ones because the caterpillars choose the leaves with the most nutrition.
It took a long time to grate all of the beeswax and put it on the fabric ready to be made into beeswax
wraps. We've also been going to Cameron Pools this Week ,It's been really fun and it's been great for
our learning. I have learnt to do safety strokes like sculling and diving.

         ME

I am super excited about next week for meeting my actual teacher because we've had Ms McGrath for
the last few weeks my real teacher is called Ms Sands.

See you later bloggers!
